Just ten months after its establishment in a partnership between the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and Northwest Territories Tourism (NWTT) the NWT Conference Bureau has secured four conferences worth an estimated $1 Million dollars in future business for the NWT’s tourism sector.
And, with an additional six conference bids in process the NWTT Executive Director Cathie Bolstad says she hopes to double that estimate by year end. “We are very optimistic,” she says. “Our approach is to work hard up front to ensure that our locations and facilities are a solid match for the conference requirements when the decisions are ready to be made.”
One of the conferences recently secured is the 2016 national conference for the Egg Farmers of Canada. The NWT Conference Bureau bid on this conference in collaboration with the NWT Egg Producers based in Hay River.
“We are very excited about hosting this conference in the NWT and look forward to showcasing a small part of the Northwest Territories to Canadian egg farmers and their families,” said Michael Wallington, Chair of the NWT Egg Producers Board. “We couldn’t have achieved this win without the partnership of the NWT Conference Bureau whose staff worked with us and other NWT business partners to put together a winning bid.”
While the availability of facilities restricted the NWT Egg Producers from hosting the national conference in Hay River, the NWT Conference Bureau was successful in finding a solution that will see the NWT host the conference in Yellowknife and realize significant spin-off leisure tourism benefits in both Yellowknife and Hay River.
NWT Tourism’s involvement in developing the conference bid for the Egg Farmers is typical of how the bureau is working to secure new conferences. NWT Tourism’s Manager for the Conference Bureau prepares and presents the bid to host conferences in collaboration with community and business partners and works to match bids to communities with the size and capabilities required by conference organizers.
When the NWT is shortlisted as a potential conference destination, NWT Tourism also coordinates and hosts site visits for the persons responsible for selecting the conference location. This enables a showcase of conference facilities, local accommodations and allows an opportunity for NWT Tourism to highlight the tourist attractions and cultural experiences that conference delegates and their families can enjoy in the host city or town and surrounding areas.
"Business conventions and meetings represent a significant growth opportunity for the NWT's tourism industry," says GNWT Minister of Industry Tourism and Investment Dave Ramsay. “As the function of our NWT Conference Bureau is being realized, so are the benefits for individual tourism and service providers and our economy.”
The NWT Conference Bureau is a new division operating from within NWT Tourism that is working to pursue tourism business for the NWT by actively marketing all regions of the NWT as a destination for meetings, conferences and incentive travel and through its proactive pursuit of conference business is working to grow the value of business tourism for the NWT Economy.
